On the eastern slopes of Mount Žeden, near the village of Rašče, at an altitude of 450 meters, is the cave Dona Douka – a natural rarity in northwestern Macedonia. With its length of 650 meters, it is the fourth longest cave in North Macedonia, representing an extremely important speleological site.

The cave of Donna Doukas is a remarkable natural phenomenon whose exploration is constantly expanding. Although initial research revealed a length of 200 metres, current knowledge indicates that the cave extends to an impressive 650 metres, with the possibility of discovering additional unexplored channels in the future.

The interior of the cave is adorned with stunning cave formations that adorn it with its unique beauty. The majestic stalactites and stalagmites create a unique atmosphere, while the diverse karst forms testify to the long geological history of this natural phenomenon.

Although the cave is mostly dry, its hydrography is particularly interesting. Small siphon ponds of water dripping from the ceiling form through different parts of the cave, creating fascinating hydrological features that contribute to the cave’s unique climate.

The structure of the cave is particularly complex, with a network of channels spread over several different levels. This complex structure creates extraordinary opportunities for speleological exploration, offering visitors a unique experience of exploring the various cave parts.

The cave fauna is especially rich and diverse. Recent scientific research has revealed numerous endemic species that inhabit this underworld, making the cave an important center of biodiversity. The presence of these unique species further enhances the scientific and natural significance of the Dona Ducas Cave.
